Are Graphite Shafts Good for Irons?

Steel shafts have long been the standard for irons, but that’s been changing as more and more golfers are recognizing the benefits of graphite shafts. Even tour professionals are using graphite shafts for some of their irons from time to time.

No, there’s no real competition between steel and graphite shafts as to which is ‘better’ for an iron; it’s entirely subjective to each player and their goals on the course. Some players may enjoy the lightweight feel of graphite shafts more so than the steel ones — and for some, it’s vice versa.

At Fairway Jockey, we are goals-oriented when it comes to finding the right shaft fit for players. Begin by reflecting on your performance goals. How would you like to improve your swing? The following differences between steel and graphite shafts on irons may point to your own subjective answer as to if a graphite shaft is the right choice for your iron.

Graphite Shafts vs. Steel Shafts for Irons

1. Weight. Graphite shafts are noticeably lighter than steel shafts, which is either win or lose for a player depending on their preference. Some remark that this boosts playability, and is easier on them for a full day on the course. Others feel that the heavier weight of a steel shaft provides for a greater force of impact when the club comes into contact with the ball.

If you are vulnerable to neck, shoulder, or back pain after a long day of golfing, the graphite shaft may help. Even a club that is marginally lighter can do wonders in reducing soreness and stress.

2. Speed. Because graphite shafts are lighter, they tend to produce higher swing speeds. For players who feel that they’re lacking in speed, this can be an attractive bonus. If players are happy with their swing speed and prefer to focus on impact, they may opt for a steel shaft for their iron.
