Best Overall

Fuijkura Ventus TR Black

What We Like: Top performer in stability. Dispersion/accuracy with Ventus TR Black is unmatched.

What We Don't Like: A very stout shaft not recommended for slower swing speeds.

The Ventus TR Black Shaft has been the unquestioned leader in popularity for high swing speed players needing max stability and trajectory control.

Used by a decorated list of tour players, the Ventus TR offers it's signature VeloCore technology. This technology allows the shaft to have an incredible resistance to torque, and helps deliver the clubhead square by providing max stability through it's resistance to twisting.

Graphite Design Tour AD VF

What We Like: Provides a very stiff tip but is softer towards the hands making it ideal for someone who likes to feel their swing in their hands.

What We Don't Like: Many players who will fit into this shaft are fast swingers who may want something to feel stiffer in the hands.

The TOUR AD VF has amassed some buzz after some big names have put this shaft in the bag. The likes of Tiger and Justin Thomas entrust this shaft due to it's superior ability to provide low spin and a flighted trajectory.

The Graphite Tour AD VF is ideal for the player that prefers a stiffer mid-section, while maintaining a very stiff tip section through impact. It comes in both X stiff and TX stiffness ranging from 68-85 grams depending on how heavy you prefer.

Mitsubishi Chemical Tensei 1K Pro White

What We Like: Softer butt section leads to a smoother overall bend profile. Will fit a wide range of golfers with higher swing speeds.

What We Don't Like: Very little not to like

The TENSEI line from Mitsubishi Chemical is a close rival to the Fujikura Ventus line. Offering similar profiles in a white (low launch), blue (mid launch), and red (high launch).

Although we prefer the ventus line for it's stability, many players prefer the TENSEI line for it's slightly softer feel.

Mitsubishi Chemical Diamana White Board Shaft

Mitsubishi Chemical Diamana Whiteboard

What We Like: Ultra stable with a bend profile that feels very comfortable to a wide range of players.

What We Don't Like: Lower swing speeds may not be able to create enough lift with this shaft.

The board is back. After a few years away, the vintage surfboard always associated with Diamana™ makes its return with Diamana WB. Built on an extraordinarily popular and tour-proven platform, WB brings classic low-low performance and the legendary stability and control you’ve come to expect after two decades. With it's return, it's quickly become one of our best sellers amongst driver shafts and within the Diamana shaft line.

Graphite Design Tour AD DI

What We Like: Softer mid-section bend profile offers great feel.

What We Don't Like: For the fastest swingers, this shaft may be slightly on the softer side.

Fujikura Ventus gets a lot of buzz due to it's use on tour. But the Graphite Design Tour AD DI has it's fair share of tour use. And for good reason. It provides the ideal combination of high launch and low spin to maximize distance.

The softer mid section profile allows players to load the shaft properly - and provides a great feel for players. Overall, The AD DI fits into a great spot in the fitting matrix because it provides low spin but is not so stout that the average player can't play it with great results.

Fujikura 2024 Ventus Blue

What We Like: Like the entire ventus line, accuracy and dispersion is close to unmatched. Ventus blue will benefit a wide range of golfers.

What We Don't Like: If you're looking for a mid-launching shaft, there is not a lot to dislike about the new ventus blue.

The Ventus Blue is a mid launching shaft within the Ventus lineup. The new 2024 model features VELOCORE+. VELOCORE+ is the next generation of Fujikura’s ground-breaking proprietary technology. The technology is designed for ultimate clubhead stabilization and promotes consistent center-face contact, tightening dispersion and increasing control of the club throughout the swing.

This shaft fits a broad range of swing types, which is why it has quickly become one of the most popular shafts on the market.

Mitsubishi Chemical Blue Board Shaft

Mitsubishi Chemical Diamana BB (Blue Board)

What We Like: Ball speeds really seem to pop with this shaft. Speed feels easy but stable at the same time.

What We Don't Like: Very consistent bend & stiffness profile from top to bottom. For players that prefer a certain softer or firmer feeling in parts of the shaft, the blue board may not be for you.

The Diamana BB is back & better than ever. An iconic shaft in the early 2000's, it makes it's return with modern technology.

Built to be the smoothest, most pleasing-feeling golf shaft possible, Diamana BB lives up to the Blueboard's iconic reputation, and provides exceptional consistency that appeals to a wide range of player types.

VA Composites Nemesys

What We Like: One of the cooler looking shafts visually. Counterbalance weighting creates a very smooth feel.

What We Don't Like: Heavier feeling butt than some shafts, which isn't for everyone.

The Nemesys shaft from VA Composites is a major sleeper. It features the unique use of tungsten powder in the butt section of the shaft which increases the weight and provides additional stability without building up wall thickness. This results in an incredible stable feel from top down.

While unrelated to performance, we think the Nemesys shaft also has some of the coolest graphics - similar to many VA Composite shafts. So if you're looking for an ultra-stable shaft with some flair we strongly recommend the Nemesys.

It's going to provide a unique combination of high launch & low-mid spin, providing a very pleasing mid-flighted trajectory.

TPT Nitro

What We Like: Very consistent shaft top to bottom. Provides very consistent dispersion and fantastic ball speeds. Also has a large selection of flex options and can be fit into any swing speed.

What We Don't Like: Premium price

The way most golf shafts are made creates inconsistencies that make a shaft “wobble” during the swing. These inconsistencies are known as the “spine.” Golfers can feel this, and they can prefer a shaft that’s heavier and/or stiffer to try to counteract the effect of spine. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it hurts.

The way TPT shafts are made, there is no spine. This is one of the reasons golfers tell us that the TPT shaft feels more stable than other shafts: even in softer flexes.

If you're looking for a mid spin/mid launch shaft with incredible distance, the TPT Nitro Range is worthy of your attention.

AutoFlex Dream 7

What We Like: Elite ball speed and dispersion. The most accurate ultra-light shaft on the market.

What We Don't Like: Premium price. Also more "whippy" feeling than most shafts which takes some getting used to.

AutoFlex was the first shaft to develop an ultra stable, sub 50 gram shaft. Since then, there has been a handful of copy cats looking to achieve the superior stability - but none have been able to match AutoFlex. They dominate the market within the ultra lightweight category due to their superior stability.

At first use, the AutoFlex shaft is very whippy, which intuitively feels unstable. But after getting use to the feeling and timing, users start to see why the shaft has become so popular.

Typically, lightweight shafts sacrifice stability and lead to a wider dispersion. But AutoFlex has been able to achieve remarkable consistency and provides golfers the best of both distance and accuracy. It comes at a steep price, but that hasn't stopped AutoFlex from becoming one of the most popular aftermarket shafts around.

Accra GX Blue

What We Like: Great performing shaft in the ultra-light category at a much better price than many of it's competitor's.

What We Don't Like: Shaft feels soft, which is not for everyone.

Speaking of AutoFlex copy cats, the Accra GX Blue has often been compared to AutoFlex with similar performance but a much better price. While we still think AutoFlex is the top dog, the GX Blue is still a great budget-friendly option for the slower speed player that wants to maximize distance.

The 100 series is engineered to promote a higher initial launch and is, generally available, in lighter weights to promote speed and distance.

The 100 series can be found in as low as a 45 gram option and as high as a 70 gram. Swing speeds closer to 90mph would benefit from the 160 or 170 models, while speeds below 80mph should lean towards to lighter 140 models for maximum distance and height.

2024 Fujikura Ventus Red

What We Like: Great all around performance. Does exactly what it's meant to do - produce higher launch and spin in an extremely consistent manner.

What We Don't Like: Not much to dislike about the Ventus Red

The brand new 2024 Ventus Red features new Velocore+ technology offering even greater stability and performance. The red is the highest launching shaft within the Ventus lineup. It's incredibly stable, and does a fantastic job helping golfers achieve a higher ball flight. For low swing speeds under 90mph, this will typically help maximize distance.

Mitsubishi Chemical Vanquish

What We Like: Consistent Feel Design helps reduce the variables between weights and flexes to allow for ease of fitting

What We Don't Like: Very soft bend profile, and not ideal for those that have a slow swing speed, but quick transition tempo.

VANQUISH™ is a brand-new ultra-premium lightweight brand designed to help golfers unlock more club head speed while still providing unparalleled consistency swing-to-swing.

In robot testing of the wood shaft, VANQUISH’s spin axis showed an improvement of a full degree in comparison to their in-house control shaft, leading to more consistent and tighter downrange dispersion.

Oban Devotion

What We Like: One of our most popular shafts for lower swing speed players due to it's balanced profile.

What We Don't Like: Not a lot to dislike, shaft profiles will fit a wide net of swing types due to it's varying bend profile as you go up in flex.

If you want a quality shaft but have a low shaft knowledge IQ, Oban Devotion is a safe bet. With the devotion shaft, lower weights/flexes are designed to produce higher launch and faster ball speeds, while higher weights are designed to produce slightly lower launch and more stability. Because of this, it's a very easy shaft to get fit into as it has something for everyone.

For lower swing speeds, we recommend the 45 or 55 gram models.

How to choose what driver shaft is best for me?

The best driver shaft for you will mostly come down to what your weaknesses are. Do you struggle getting the ball up in the air? Do you put too much spin on the ball and see your drives balloon up in the air? Do you struggle with distance but are generally an accurate driver? These questions and more will help determine the best shaft for you.

Overall here are some key things to look for when selecting a shaft:

SHAFT LAUNCH & SPIN CHARACTERISTICS

All shafts typically will advertise launch and spin characters as either low, medium, or high. A low spin low launch shaft is most helpful for those with high swing speeds (105mph+). These shafts are designed to keep spin rates down and prevent distance losses caused by drives that have too much spin.

On the flip side, a high launch, high spin shaft is helpful for lower swing speeds (90mph and lower) by helping players increase their carry distance.

Spin rate is a fine line. Too much spin can cause a ball to balloon and have little roll. While too little spin will not carry far enough and ultimately lose distance. If you're unsure about which is best for you, leaning towards a mid launch profile is always a safe bet.

Shaft Weight

Simple rule of thumb

  • Heavier shafts are more stable and generally help improve accuracy. They also drive ball flight lower.
  • Lighter shafts help players hit the ball higher and swing faster. This typically leads to losses in accuracy but will be worth it to a player who struggles with distance.

Understanding Shaft Flex

  • Flex refers to how much the shaft bends during the swing. Common flex ratings include:
    • L (Ladies): Best if you drive it 200-220 yards
    • A (Amateur or Senior): Best if you drive it 220-230 yards
    • R (Regular): Best if you drive it 240-260 yards
    • S (Stiff): Best if you drive it 260-280 yards
    • X (Extra Stiff): Best if you drive it 280+ yards

If your shots tend to slice (curve right for right-handers), a more flexible shaft can help by promoting a faster release of the club head. If you hook (curve left for right-handers), a stiffer shaft could be beneficial.

Shaft Length Considerations

Standard driver shaft length is either 45.5" or 45.75" depending on the brand

Affects of lengthening a shaft

Opting for a longer shaft length, outside of accounting for player height, has the following tendencies:

  • The longer the shaft the greater the ball speed, but the tougher it will be to control
  • Lengthening a shaft can promote a draw. Your setup will be slightly further from the ball which typically will increase the arc of your swing and set your club in a slightly flatter position at address.

Affects of shortening a shaft

Opting for a shorter shaft length, outside of accounting for player height, has the following tendencies:

  • Shorter shafts can improve control and accuracy.
  • Your setup will be closer to the ball, which will have the opposite effect of a longer shaft and promote a fade.

WHAT ARE THE MOST POPULAR SHAFT MODELS?

These shaft lines consistently are our best sellers, and rank highest amongst tour pros and amateurs alike:

1. Fujikura Ventus Golf Shafts

2. Graphite Design Tour AD Golf Shafts

3. Mitsubishi Chemical Diamana Golf Shafts

4. Mitsubishi Chemical Tensei Golf Shafts

When all else fails, get fit

With so many shafts available to consumers, it's tough to decide which shaft is best for you. Even if you're knowledgeable on the topic. Plus, half the battle is finding something that "feels" good to you. Which you can only find out by trying the shaft.

If you can, we always recommend getting fit to be 100% certain on the shaft that will perform best for you. If you can't, take our driver shaft selector quiz for the next best thing!
